The Paleo diet consists of those foods that would have been readily available before the time of modern agriculture. Foods that can be foraged, such as vegetables, herbs, fruits, and nuts, were gathered and consumed during their individual growing season. Fresh meats were hunted and fish were caught. Notably absent from their diet were the grains, sugars and dairy products that are the mainstay of the standard American diet.
Lean Meats and Seafood
Grass-fed meats and free-range poultry are the best sources of lean protein to be found. A typical serving size is between four to eight ounces. Grass-fed animals have a different structure of fat, a healthier balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Wild caught seafood is also on the Paleo menu. Lean meats provide protein to aid the development of strong muscles and improve the overall function of the immune system.
Vegetables are extremely diverse in nature. They provide the very best in nutrition. Vegetables enhance the diet with a wide variety of vitamins and micronutrients. A colorful selection of fresh vegetables as a part of each meal will decrease the risk of many diseases.
Fruits contain an abundance of sugars which, eaten in excess, leads to disease and weight problems. Eating fruit only when in season will help maintain the balance needed for a healthy diet.
Healthy, natural fats provide fuel for the body. Olive oil, coconut oil, avocados and raw tree nut are all acceptable sources for healthy fats. A moderate intake of these monosaturated fats has been shown to reduce the decline of cognitive failure and lessen the risk of heart disease and cancer.
What to Eliminate
Eliminating grains, sugar and dairy foods may seem extreme, but many diseases are linked to the consumption of these foods. Diabetes, celiac disease and obesity are just a few. Humans properly digest very few grains and because of this, even whole grains are eliminated in a Paleo diet.
Sugars are not only empty calories, but also they are not recognized by the human body as food. Natural sugars found in fruits and vegetables are metabolized in a much difference way than refine sugar. This difference in the metabolic process is the cause of many diseases, such as diabetes.
Dairy products did not exist in the diet before modern agriculture. Milk, provided by the mother, is designed for infants in the first year of life. Milk and dairy by-products, such as butter and cheese, are not processed by the human digestive tract efficiently. This is why the rate of lactose intolerance continues to climb year after year.
